Jaguar Type 01 Unveiled: Balancing Design, Power, and Performance

The new production Jaguar Type 01 has officially been unveiled! After two years of anticipation, enthusiasts and critics alike finally have the opportunity to see, touch, and experience the latest iteration of Jaguar’s sport GT. This car, built on the foundation laid by the controversial Type 00 concept introduced in November 2024, has certainly stirred emotions within the automotive community.

The controversy surrounding the Type 00 concept was unprecedented for Jaguar, igniting debates over its design and purpose. Unlike earlier Jaguar models such as the XJ-S, the Type 00 launched with a bold marketing approach that raised eyebrows. Critics speculated whether the design language championed by the concept would survive to the production model, fearing that it would be softened for mass appeal.

Recent drive experiences of the heavily camouflaged prototypes indicated Jaguar was committed to retaining the overall size and proportions of the Type 00. On a press event in mid-September 2026, the eagerly awaited reveal confirmed that the distinctive design language has remained intact.

What stood out during the reveal was the car’s imposing yet exuberant appearance. The Type 01 features a notable long bonnet, a low roofline, and sleek lines that culminate in a striking rear with a slatted, windowless panel. The proportions hint at a 17% dashboard-to-front-axle length ratio, reminiscent of the iconic E-type.

The engineering behind the Type 01 is equally commendable, especially in terms of its flat, long bonnet and expertly shaped side panels, known as ‘the impossible panel’ within Jaguar, due to its intricate production process requiring substantial pressure from high-end manufacturing equipment.

Aerodynamics play a crucial role in the Type 01’s design, with active features including adjustable vanes in the front vents and a three-position rear spoiler aimed at enhancing its performance. Despite these advancements, not all design elements hit the mark. The large charging flap stands out in a way that feels a little clunky, while the car’s lower edges might not be as visually appealing as hoped.

Opening the frameless doors reveals a sleek interior, which, while stylish, may not feel particularly spacious, especially in the back. Consistent with its sports GT identity, the cabin’s minimalist design emphasizes efficiency and modernity. It features a central spine with storage options and an intuitive driver display—this practical design choice eliminates the distraction of a central screen common in many contemporary vehicles.

The interior builds on premium features that are characteristic of the Jaguar brand, including luxurious touches that extend from the floor to the doors. One of the standout elements is the panoramic soundbar positioned across the base of the windscreen, integrating advanced audio technology into its design. Additionally, the rear-view system cleverly substitutes a traditional mirror with a camera, adhering to the overall aesthetic of the car.

On the powertrain front, Jaguar has firmly committed to an all-electric platform, dispelling earlier rumors of a deviation from this approach. The Type 01's EV-only powertrain is designed for luxury performance, with a notable output of 1016bhp (1030PS) and 1007lb ft (1365Nm) of torque, allowing it to sprint from 0-62mph in just 3.2 seconds. Additionally, it promises a driving range of around 400 miles, addressing concerns surrounding EV range and charging infrastructure.

This impressive performance places the Type 01 within a competitive price range starting at £120,000, positioning it strategically above luxury brands like BMW and Audi. Jaguar aims to establish itself in a challenging market for luxury EVs, attracting consumers who may have reservations about its direction.

Jaguar’s team, particularly vehicle engineering director Matt Becker, exudes confidence in the Type 01's capabilities. He emphasizes the engineering prowess and innovative design behind this model, which boasts more than 360 patent applications, underlining its uniqueness in the market. The key challenge ahead lies in capturing consumer interest and confidence amid skepticism surrounding the brand's transition to all-electric models.

The Jaguar Type 01 is not merely another automotive entry; it represents a bold leap into the future of EVs while honoring the brand’s storied heritage. If it hits its mark, it could redefine the landscape of luxury electric vehicles, allowing Jaguar to reclaim its spot among the giants of the automotive industry.
