A Brief History of CCM

CCM, or Clews Competition Machines, was established in 1971 by Alan Clews in Bolton, England. Alan was an avid trials and scrambles rider who ingeniously managed to commute on the very same motorcycle he raced during the weekends. Following the disbanding of the BSA competition division, he capitalized on available works parts to create motocross bikes from his garage, setting the stage for what would become a legendary motorcycle brand.

CCM’s early motorcycles were known for their modifications using BSA B50 singles, catering to motocross competitors in a field increasingly dominated by lightweight two-strokes. Notable successes came during the 1970s, particularly with riders like John Banks and Vic Eastwood competing at high levels in national championships.

In 1981, a significant portion of CCM was acquired by Armstrong, which expanded its focus towards military contracts. The collaboration led to the development of various military bikes, including the notable Can-Am models. The knock-on effect of these contracts bolstered the company's reputation and manufacturing capabilities.

By 1984, the acquisition of the rights to the Rotax-engine SWM XN Tornado further pushed the company’s innovations. The military-grade Armstrong MT500, produced in limited numbers, demonstrated the brand's adaptability in engineering for specific applications.

Throughout the late 20th century, CCM continued to pivot and reinvent itself. Alan Clews reacquired the brand in 1987 and again shifted focus back to producing off-road and road-legal motorcycles. The introduction of the GP450 adventure bike in 2014 highlighted that the company remained committed to contemporary designs while preserving its rich heritage.
