Maximizing Boxster Maintenance: Essential Upgrades During Clutch Replacement

Electric Vehicles Sep 11, 2026 Eddy Eckart

Explore crucial upgrades and maintenance tips for first-gen Boxster owners tackling comprehensive service, including clutch, IMS bearing, and more.

Maximizing Boxster Maintenance: Essential Upgrades During Clutch Replacement

This maintenance journey began with a significant service plan for my 12-year-old Boxster, which involved replacing critical components like the clutch and IMS bearing. I anticipated the scope of the project and decided to seize the opportunity for additional upgrades while the engine was accessible. The aim was to ensure that after tackling the work, my Boxster remained in top condition for years to come, avoiding the repetitive disassembly that comes with piecemeal repairs.

It’s important for first-gen Boxster owners to consider various upgrades and replacements during major service appointments. Let’s delve into the key components I addressed while my engine was out, with a focus on effectiveness, simplicity, and cost savings.

The Basics of Maintenance

Removing the engine from the Boxster was likely overkill, but it provided complete access to the timing chain guides and allowed the shop, Steinel’s Autowerks, to install a more reliable IMS bearing solution. In an effort to save on labor costs, I decided to handle the engine removal myself, especially given my enthusiasm for using my new lift.

With approximately 77,000 miles on the clock, my Boxster's 3.2-liter flat-six hadn’t seen significant service since the last 60K-mile checkpoint about a decade ago. This maintenance included essential tasks like replacing the rear main seal and installing a new air-oil separator, which can prevent excessive oil consumption and startup smoke. It's imperative to follow OEM recommendations for these parts.

Additionally, I opted to replace the coolant hoses and serpentine belt. Changing the belt is relatively easy with the engine in place, but given that I was already in the thick of it, I seized the moment to make these updates.

Addressing Drivetrain Mounts

In the days leading up to my engine removal, I noticed increased vibrations, suggesting a failing engine mount. The original mount was cracked, prompting me to replace it completely rather than opting for a cost-saving center section replacement.

This “while you're in there” service philosophy also applies to the transmission mounts. Initially, I overlooked them, only to discover shifting difficulties once the engine was reassembled. Catching these minor issues can significantly enhance the driving experience. For a more cost-effective solution, I sourced lower-priced 993 mounts, which integrated easily and paired well with solid urethane replacements from PRG Products, addressing both function and budget concerns.

Replacing the Coolant Expansion Tank

Another critical replacement was the coolant expansion tank. These tanks are known for cracking and can lead to significant coolant leaks. Fortunately, my preventative inspection revealed only minor moisture, which warranted an immediate replacement to avoid future breakdowns.

The installation was straightforward, but accessing the hose connections on the engine side proved challenging. I made sure to source a genuine Porsche part for reliability and avoided cheaper alternatives that might fail prematurely. Replacing the coolant cap, too, was a smart decision, ensuring a complete refresh.

Fuel System Considerations

Although not a typical “while you're in there” component, the fuel pump's age should prompt consideration during any service. Given the age of these vehicles, replacing the fuel pump can mitigate roadside failures during long trips. Last June, I encountered a fuel pump failure just before an event. Thankfully, the issue occurred at home, avoiding an inconvenient situation on the road.

Before tackling the fuel pump itself, I recommended purchasing a spare fuel pump relay, as they’re not readily available at most parts stores. Having a backup can provide peace of mind for upcoming journeys.

The fuel pump replacement process is manageable but should be approached carefully to avoid any fuel spills. Also, ensure the fuel gauge float has full range movement to prevent measurement errors after installation.

Looking Ahead

There’s a vibrant community of Boxster enthusiasts who share insights and experiences, creating a rich knowledge base. While this phase of the project focused on essential maintenance, future columns will delve into more exciting upgrades, including elements related to suspension and exhaust.

Feel free to share your experiences and suggestions as I continue to refine my Boxster restoration journey.
