At 62, Doug Kalitta excels in drag racing and aviation, leading NHRA's top fuel scene and reviving Kalitta Air with remarkable dedication.

Doug Kalitta: Celebrated Drag Racer, Pilot, and CEO of Kalitta Air

When you think of someone who spends their weekends racing at 330 mph, you might not immediately picture Doug Kalitta. Instead, you might choose someone like his uncle, Connie Kalitta, a drag racing icon known for his burly physique and engaging personality. At 88, Connie remains actively involved with their family’s three drag racing teams. In the same breath, you might also recognize “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, who at 94 continues to captivate fans from his drag racing museum in Florida.

The more reserved Doug Kalitta is not as flamboyant as the previous legends, but he’s undeniably carving his name into the NHRA Top Fuel record books, aligning himself among the ranks of Connie and Garlits. Unlike his uncle and Garlits, whose rivalry and personalities were famously chronicled in the film Heart Like a Wheel (1983), Doug's legacy is likely to center on his pivotal role in guiding Kalitta Motorsports to the pinnacle of NHRA racing while simultaneously revitalizing the family business, Kalitta Air, which his uncle established in 1967. Over the decades, Kalitta Air has transformed from a single twin-engine Cessna 310 into a formidable fleet of 22 Boeing 747s and 16 Boeing 777s. Even at 62, Doug maintains a lifelong passion for flying and racing.

Doug’s meticulous work ethic and talent were evident early in life. Starting at age 18, he apprenticed as a line service mechanic for Kalitta Air, and by 19, he was flying alongside Connie to racetracks on weekends. His responsibilities included intricate tasks like removing and inspecting the engine’s oil pan, rods, and crankshaft. Alongside these duties, Doug also started his journey into commercial flying, eventually earning his Airframe and Powerplant License from the FAA, granting him the authority to service both aircraft assemblies and engines.

As his career progressed, he quickly moved into leadership roles within the aviation sector. Doug earned his Learjet license at 21 and managed the maintenance of Honeywell TPE331 gas-turbine engines before transitioning to Pratt & Whitney JT3D engines, which were vital for larger aircraft. Though he sought opportunities in drag racing, an introduction to short-oval racing sparked Doug’s competitive instincts. In 1991, at 27, he began racing four-cylinder “midgets” in the United States Auto Club (USAC) and quickly earned the Rookie of the Year title, showcasing his impressive talent.

Simultaneously, his aviation career flourished. In the mid-1980s, while managing a shop for DC-8 engines, Doug became one of the youngest DC-8 pilots by age 28. By 1993, he was also serving as Vice President of Central and South American Sales for American International Airways while excelling as a competitive racer, securing victories in various sprint car races, including a USAC National Sprint Car Championship win in 1994.

Doug’s reserved nature contrasted sharply with the more aggressive demeanor of Connie, who thrived on competition. Tony Stewart, a former USAC racer himself, describes Doug as "ultra-competitive" yet approachable. Where Connie thrived on confrontations, Doug preferred to let his driving speak for itself. He excelled at larger tracks, demonstrating impressive speed without being fazed.

The breakthrough Doug had been waiting for came in 1998 when he stepped into NHRA Top Fuel racing after Scott Kalitta, his cousin, decided to retire. At that time, Connie had shifted from racing to focus on managing his rapidly expanding airline, American International Airways (AIA), which became one of the world’s largest cargo airlines, generating significant revenues. During Doug’s debut season in NHRA, it wasn’t just the competitive atmosphere that loomed large; the tangible risks of Top Fuel racing added immense pressure, where every launch presented an extraordinary challenge.

From the very beginning of his Top Fuel career, Doug showed resilience. His first race demonstrated remarkable skill; upon launching, his dragster lifted its front wheels, a situation requiring quick reflexes to regain control. Doug modulated the throttle perfectly, landing him a favorable impression among spectators and crew management alike. Events rapidly unfolded for Doug, as he garnered his first national event victory at the NHRA Autolite Nationals in Sonoma, California, midseason. However, the pursuit of his first championship would take much longer.

From 1998 to 2019, Doug experienced the heartache of finishing second in points six times, often falling just short against Tony Schumacher, a formidable competitor backed by ace crew chief Alan Johnson. This grueling consistency reflects Doug’s dedication, as he drove himself relentlessly in both drag racing and his aviation business. Tony Stewart highlights Doug’s determination: “Nothing fazes him... If he doesn’t succeed, he’s just going to keep digging ‘till he does.”

During these years, Doug’s professional life shifted significantly. In April 2000, AIA declared bankruptcy, prompting Connie to reclaim the airline's charter segment. He sought to restore Kalitta Airlines, looking to leverage the more expansive aircraft operational certificate for larger scheduled cargo flights. Doug promptly took charge of Kalitta Charters, beginning with 11 aircraft, while simultaneously managing other enterprises like Kalitta Turbines.

The subsequent growth of the Kalitta business operations has been impressive. Doug has expanded his fleet to 60 aircraft distributed across five companies. Exactly what distinguishes the Kalitta operation is its standard of excellence, reflective of the family ethos. Despite initial hesitations, Doug continued racing even as his family burgeoned with the birth of his son, Mitch, in 2001, and daughter, Avery, in 2003. His commitment to drag racing remained steadfast, allowing him to balance his personal and professional responsibilities remarkably well.

Today, both Mitch and Avery have found their paths and contribute to Kalitta's continuing legacy. After completing his studies at Northwood University, Mitch entered Kalitta Charters’ accounting department and, not surprisingly, is now pursuing flying with eagerness. Avery, a University of Michigan graduate, is involved with a women’s soccer team in Louisville. The involvement of the next generation in the family business speaks volumes about Doug’s dedication both to his family and the sport.

The impacts of drag racing on the Kalitta family run deep, possessing both celebratory and somber memories. Connie, known as "The Bounty Hunter," cemented his legacy with numerous accolades, including two championships in the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA), ten NHRA national event victories, and the distinction of being the first Top Fuel driver to exceed 200 mph in 1964. He was honored with the NHRA Lifetime Achievement award in 2016. As a team owner, Connie achieved five world championships, underscoring his deep commitment to drag racing.

The dark side of this racing heritage is marked by the tragic loss of Scott Kalitta in 2008 during a qualifying run that ended catastrophically. The resulting crash led to significant changes in NHRA tracks and safety regulations, notably reducing Top Fuel tracks from a quarter-mile to 1,000 feet. Doug experienced this tragedy firsthand; he recalls the day with somber recollection, acknowledging how Scott’s death profoundly reshaped the sport he loved.

Following these shifts, Doug's fortunes in NHRA would eventually change when crew chief Alan Johnson joined his team in 2022. Alan brought considerable expertise and a comprehensive approach to tune the team’s performance. This included updating crucial systems such as clutches, superchargers, and specialized tuning methodologies that Doug needed to boost his competitive edge.

In time, Doug began to see the fruits of these changes as the 2023 season progressed. At the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals, he claimed his first NHRA Top Fuel championship. However, the celebration, reflective of Doug’s character, was remarkably understated. He simply expressed gratitude to his team, remaining humble in victory. Tony Stewart highlighted this sentiment, noting that even in triumph, Doug's demeanor remained calm and collected.

Kalitta Motorsports, with its already formidable reputation, elevated its performance under Johnson’s guidance. Doug continued to build on his achievements, winning a second NHRA championship in 2025 and setting notable track records, including a remarkable run at zMax Dragway in April 2026, clocking 3.692 seconds at a blistering 342.98 mph, marking the third-fastest time in NHRA history.

As 2026 unfolds, Doug stands on the cusp of another competitive season, neck-and-neck in points with teammate Shawn Langdon. The team has excelled in establishing lasting relationships with sponsors—an integral part of drag racing. Although they no longer receive direct manufacturer support from Toyota, Kalitta Motorsports' record remains strikingly prolific. Dave Head, the team's general manager, attests that the team brings an extra trailer for hospitality at races, showcasing their commitment to maintaining positive sponsor engagement.

Despite Connie’s absence from certain events due to health issues, his presence is palpable, serving as motivating force within the organization. Doug’s humility comes through at sponsor gatherings, recognizing the importance of the relationships built over decades, emphasizing that the Kalitta legacy flourishes through camaraderie and mutual support.

Outside the racing circuit, Doug maintains a clear focus on balancing his multiple responsibilities at Kalitta Air. This operational duality makes his days hectic; one might find him managing an aviation suite during the week and racing on weekends. Kalitta’s operations play a critical role in transporting cargo, including medical supplies and automotive parts, utilizing the expansive reach and logistics capabilities of their aircraft fleet. Time management is key, with Doug delegating tasks whenever possible to maximize his efficiency across the spectrum of his commitments.

The next generation, led by Mitch, is growing in the motorsport ranks, following the family legacy while discovering their individuality within the world of racing.
