The JAS Tensei revamps the classic Honda NSX with modern technology, a Judd-built engine, and Pininfarina's design, limited to just 35 units.

The Honda NSX, an iconic model from the 1990s, has recently undergone a significant transformation, marking its entry into the restomod market with the introduction of the JAS Tensei. This new rendition, which debuted on October 8, 2023, showcases the collaboration between JAS Motorsport—a renowned Italian racing firm—and the esteemed design house Pininfarina. The goal of this project is not only to refresh the NSX aesthetic but also to enhance its performance and engineering.

The development of the Tensei stems from a desire to merge the nostalgia of the original NSX with contemporary automotive advancements. Rather than just a superficial facelift, JAS Motorsport has fundamentally re-engineered the vehicle while maintaining its iconic structure. At the heart of this restomod is a reinforced first-generation NSX chassis, coupled with lightweight autoclave-cured carbonfibre body panels. This results in a significant reduction in weight, with JAS estimating a dry weight of just 1,250 kg.
One of the most notable aspects of the Tensei is its engine, which has received considerable upgrades. Developed by Judd Power, this is no ordinary powertrain; it begins with the original Honda C30A V6 engine block and expands its capacity from 3.0 to 3.5 liters. This increase in displacement, along with the replacement of nearly all internal components—including alloy heads, aggressive camshafts, and titanium valves—significantly enhances performance. The revamped engine achieves an impressive output of 414 bhp at 8,200 rpm, with an 8,500 rpm redline, delivering power to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission and a mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential.

Design and Engineering Innovations
In terms of dimensions, JAS has made substantial changes to improve handling and presence on the road. The front track is now 170 mm wider, the rear track is 190 mm wider, and the wheelbase has been extended by 55 mm. This expansion contributes to the Tensei's enhanced road dynamics, while Pininfarina's design retains some classic NSX features, like the iconic pop-up headlights—now re-engineered with LED Matrix lighting.
Pininfarina's design philosophy for the Tensei emphasizes retaining the essence of the original model while incorporating modern aesthetics and technologies. Key aerodynamics improvements include a flat floor and an active rear diffuser, critical for improved downforce and stability at high speeds. The silhouette still reflects classic NSX characteristics, such as a low beltline and a slender glasshouse, ensuring that the Tensei feels undeniably connected to its predecessor.

Interior Features and Driving Experience
Inside the Tensei, the design remains focused on driver engagement, emphasizing visibility and control. Rather than opting for a technology-heavy cockpit with large touchscreens, the layout consists of a classic analogue tachometer alongside two smaller OLED displays. This balance aligns with the philosophy of preserving the original NSX experience, which is known for its clear sightlines and mechanical engagement.
The interior features bespoke elements such as carbonfibre Sabelt seats and milled titanium details. An exposed manual gearshift mechanism harkens back to the pure driving experience that enthusiasts cherish. JAS's focus on creating a true analogue supercar is admirable, particularly in an age increasingly dominated by computerized interfaces and automatic transmissions.
Production Numbers and Customization Options
Production of the JAS Tensei will be limited to just 35 units, with each vehicle crafted to meet individual specifications. This bespoke approach ensures that owners will receive a unique rendition of the Tensei, tailored to their preferences. As it stands, the path to acquiring one of these exclusive models is through JAS Motorsport’s atelier in Arluno, located near Milan.
Overall, the JAS Tensei represents a thoughtful homage to the original Honda NSX while integrating modern engineering and design aesthetics. With its limited production and high-performance metrics, it promises to be a sought-after addition to the roster of high-end restomod vehicles.
