Exploring the Porsche 964 Carrera RS: A Comprehensive New Book Debuts

A comprehensive new book titled 964 Carrera RS, authored by Christoph Mäder, has been released, meticulously chronicling the development and racing heritage of the Porsche 964 Carrera RS and its variants. Stretching across 442 pages, Mäder’s publication is the culmination of nearly four years of extensive research, which involved an in-depth analysis of factory documentation, technical bulletins, build sheets, and previously unseen photographs sourced from Porsche’s Werk 2 facility in Zuffenhausen.

What sets this publication apart is not just its thorough examination of the well-known 3.6-litre model but its inclusive coverage of the entire family of derivatives. From the Touring and Clubsport specifications to the more rare 3.8 RS and RSR models, Mäder ensures that no stone is left unturned. Compellingly, he details the less conventional aspects, such as the Carrera Cup USA and the RS America, presenting them as integral parts of the Carrera RS story rather than as separate entities. One particularly intriguing chapter discusses a limited batch of 20 cars originally intended for a one-make racing series in Macau, providing readers with insights into Porsche’s broader racing ambitions.

The book is rich in detail, documenting not only the technical specifications of the models discussed but also the intricate transformations the vehicles underwent during production. Mäder meticulously records alterations made to reduce weight, including specific parts that were removed or reinforced, modifications to brackets and captive nuts, and the introduction of additional welding in certain areas. These details are supported by factory-issued Certificates of Authenticity and technical documentation, making it a valuable resource for enthusiasts and collectors alike.

In shaping this narrative, Mäder conducted over 100 hours of interviews with more than 40 individuals closely associated with the Carrera RS program. His interviews spanned a broad range of roles including Porsche managers, engineers, designers, racing drivers, and team principals. This first-hand insight and the expertise of figures like former Porsche Motorsport director Jost Capito, who penned the book's foreword, add depth to the historical narrative, bringing personal anecdotes and insider perspectives to life.

The history of the Porsche 964 is interwoven with financial pressures that the company faced during its development. Mäder begins the story with the broader context of Porsche in the late 1980s and early 1990s, a period marked by both challenge and opportunity, setting the tone for the creation of the Carrera Cup in 1990 followed by the Carrera RS launch.

On a production front, Mäder's dedication doesn't end with the narrative; it's reflected in the book's physical design as well. This marks his first work published through his own company, Mäder Morse Field Recordings, and the production is predominantly based in Germany, utilizing three specialized printers for various processes such as offset, digital, and silk-screen printing. Notably, the book block is partly assembled by hand, showcasing a commitment to craftsmanship. The pages are printed on high-quality Swedish paper, sourced as the primary component that enhances the tactile experience for readers.

The standard edition of the book is limited to 2,824 numbered copies, with distribution across English, German, and French. Specifically, the quantities break down to 1,600 in English, 964 in German, and 260 in French. To cater to collectors, a Special Edition featuring 964 handbound copies will also be produced. This special version will present a choice of four distinct color schemes, each aesthetically tied to Porsche's iconic palette — 300 in Rubystone Red, 300 in Maritime Blue, 200 in Pearl Grey, and 164 in Amazon Green. Pricing for the standard edition starts at €366.36 (excluding local taxes and shipping) while the Special Edition has a price tag of €459.81. Both editions are available for purchase directly through Mäder Morse Field Recordings.

For fans and aficionados of the Porsche brand, 964 Carrera RS serves as a vital historical text, offering a rare glimpse into the legacy of one of Porsche’s most revered models. It is a significant addition not only to automotive literature but also to the historiography of motorsports, providing a definitive work that both informs and excites.
